The Old Man

Sun May 31, 2009, 10:14 AM

  • Reading: Black
The other day I was sitting in a resturaunt
It was just after Memorial Day, and my mind was still on those who gave their lives in battle.
I looked out the window, and there I saw a little old man..

He walked slowly, and was hunched over.
I looked closer at the man walking up to the door.
He had a tattoo on his arm.
It was old, and faded.
'United States Marine Corps' it says.

He wore a Proud American shirt
And a Marine Corps hat.
As I studied the hat it gave me a glimpse into his past.

A Purple Heart, and ribbons decorated his hat.
I started wondering about what all he had been through,
What pain, sorrow, and fear he had gone through.
The people he loved and lost.
The fear of leaving a family behind.
The things he had seen.

How many of his friends died on the beaches of Normandy?
How many of his friends are buried in Arlington?

I began to wonder if people noticed what he had done for our country.
I stood up from where I was sitting.
I walked up to him, looked him in the eye and said, 'Thank you for serving our Country.'
The sparkle in his eyes made me realize the good I had done.

As I sat back down and carried on with my day, tears sprang to my eyes.
He sacrificed so much for our country, and all I could do was shake his hand and say 'thank you.'
And to think we make a point to only think about them twice a year.
